The Demanding Boss
A man said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his mind and went”
Matthew 21:28b-29 NRSV
The son had spent days working under the burning sun; he wanted a rest, but there was more work. He was tired, but his father—his boss—said he must work. For whatever reason, the son said no. Later, he changes his mind; he goes to work.
Sometimes, or perhaps often, our bosses tell us to work more. We may want to refuse. Bosses have the power to promote or fire us. We hope we’re indispensable, but most of us aren’t. So do we go to work? Do we say no, but go later? Or do we try to understand what is being asked? We always have the power to ask why. Polite, honest inquiry gives us understanding and hope.
